MAP is excited to announce a three week online lecture series titled Photographs: Collection Care & Management as part of the MAP-Tata Trusts Art Conservation Initiative, from October 27th – November 17th, 2023.

Designed to introduce key concepts in photographs collection care & management, the series includes fifteen lectures spread across three weeks, and takes an in depth look at identification of types of photographs, signs of deterioration, tools for preventive conservation, housing and documentation.

The workshop will be led by senior art conservator Anupam Sah, with additional sessions by experienced national and international faculty who specialise in photographs conservation and collection care.

Anupam Sah

Academic Consultant, Tata Trusts Art Conservation Initiative

Anupam Sah is an art conservation-restoration practitioner, strategist and educator who has trained in India, Italy and the United Kingdom. Hailing from the Kumaon region of the Himalayas, he has done his B.Sc., followed by an M.A. in Art Conservation for which he was a gold medalist from the National Museum Institute, Delhi. Anupam has been working across the Indian subcontinent for the past three decades, employing an interdisciplinary systems approach to address heritage conservation issues and also linking them with multi sectoral development. Committed to strengthening the profession, he has helped develop over 20 art conservation facilities and conducted over 280 training sessions. He is currently the Academic Consultant for the Tata Trusts Art Conservation Initiative, the Founding Director of Anupam Heritage Lab (India) Private Limited and Secretary of the Himalayan Society for Heritage and Art Conservation, a not-for-profit NGO.

Anupam’s illustrious career includes Director of Projects at INTACH Conservation Institutes (1995-2006), Head of Art Conservation, Research, and Training at CSMVS Art Conservation Centre (2008-2023). He has also provided heritage conservation, training and consulting services for the Government of India’s Ministries of Culture, Tourism, Urban Development, as well as various State Governments, Universities, NGOs, World Bank, UNDP, UNESCO, Tata Trusts, Aga Khan Trust for Culture, World Monument Fund, Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute, Harvard University, University of Pretoria, and other institutions and corporate houses. A prolific lecturer, Anupam has authored numerous reports and books, and is a member of the board of studies of various university programmes. He has been conferred with the Sanskriti Award for Social and Cultural Achievement, Knighthood of the Order of the Star of Italy, Unesco-Asia Pacific Heritage Awards and commendations, and most recently the Marwar Ratan Award 2023 for outstanding and notable contribution in the field of art conservation and restoration.
