The Reader’s Bloc is an online/IRL group of readers taking part in reading, listening and sharing exercises around texts that help us learn more about ourselves, the identities we share and the communities we live in.
For our next session, we are thinking about homes and how they hold memories that shaped our journey through life. We are reading two texts – a short story, My Cheesecake-Shaped Poverty by Haruki Murakami where a couple have to choose to live in a small disgruntled house in the middle of the railway tracks because they are poor, and cannot find any better house in the big town Tokyo, but as they start living there, they make memories in the house and explore a sense of warmth in it; and a personal essay, Living in a Work of Art by Ursula K. Le Guin in which the author talks about her childhood home, a Maybeck’s house, her experiences growing up in that house and how it influenced her writing.
This programme is exclusively for 18–25-year-olds.
This session is conducted as part of our engagements for the MAP Youth Collective. The MAP Youth Collective is a community for young people (18-25 year-olds) to engage with the arts and culture sector. The collective is for, of and by young people — to explore our shared identities and interests through art.
